The masseter — the powerful chewing muscle at the angle of the jaw — can become enlarged or overactive in many people. This causes a broader, more angular face as well as unpleasant symptoms such as tension headaches, jaw pain and nocturnal teeth grinding (bruxism).
The treatment involves injections of botulinum toxin type A directly into the masseter muscles. The toxin blocks the nerve signals, the excessive tension releases and the muscle mass gradually decreases — the jawline becomes softer and the facial shape slimmer and more balanced.
